The hospital is in Maryland. The location is not very good.Residents live
in Laurel, College Park, or Silver Spring.
The hospital has a level-2 trauma ctr, and a full cath lab able to do PCI.
The hospital claims to have financial crisis every five years, but always
followed by government bail-out.The PGY1 resident pay is 39000, and hours
are 7am-5pm, and the cafeteria food is so-so.40% private patients. Lots of
Noon conference was about wound care paper work and therefore hard to tell
the quality of noon conference on regular days.
My interview included 3 attendings: Dr. Valenti, PD; Dr. Naduri, key faculty;
and Dr. Green.
Dr. Valenti is a MD PhD. Her PhD was in Cardiovascular Pharmacology. She
asked me to tell her about myself. She also asked me to present a case. She
also asked me to do a CS case with her.
Dr. Naduri from India had doubts about my transcript and wanted to make sure
she understood the education system in China.
Dr. Linda Green, associate PD, expert in EBM and public health. She asked me
which journals I read and which sections; Green then asked me to discuss a
recent paper that I read.
A PGY-3 from Iran took us on a tour of hospital. She told me that they do
not pay for PDA, and do not let resident access hospital internet from home.
They do not have EMR system, but can read lab results on a hospital website.
Call room was clean, with 2 full beds in each room, and linens were changed
everyday. But there is no shower in the room. No computer access in the call
room. The ER is okay, but wards are not bright and shiny enough.
They do not have any research in the program. They do have case-report
posters presented at ACP.
The cases there are very sick due to lack of patient insurance. They only
have overnight calls if you happen to be on call during weekend. They have
nightfloat. If you go home, and you don't need to answer calls.
The attendings are mostly FMGs.They lack full-time teaching attendings. The
hospital is the only clinical site for residents to work in.Their ER is
staffed by other institute's EM residents and PG's IM residents are allowed
to go there during PGY2.
The nurses are nice and friendly and told me that the hospital sees most
poor patients for free and therefore is always in red.
For those who want to do cards or GI, the chance to go to competitive
fellowships like cards and Gi is close to zero, according to the PD.
They prematch all but 2 slots.
