(Wed Mar 4 23:20:34 2009)

Why this
specialty?why this program? why now? why came to the USA? will your family
relocate with you? what does your husband do?

Are you ready for the tough training? Do
you have enough family support?

My 2 cents on the interviews/match:

A: Common questions:
1. why this specialty?
2. why this program?
3. you have left clinic medicine for so many years, do you have confidence?
4. Do you have family? Will you family relocate with you?
5. When they heard that I have two young kids, they always ask me if I can
get help during the residency, since it is tough to take care of two young
kids.

Since everyone has different life story, it is important to tailor the
answers to convince the interviewers.

B: It may be worthwhile to resign the jobs to get clinical exposure and
thus get good LORs, if financially manageable. I did not resign my job until
last November, when I could not even find time to interview. I felt much
relieved after I finally made that decision. Although money was tight, I
got the freedom to schedule my interviews and got more time to prepare for
IVs. Otherwise, running among a busy full-time job, interviews, and family
would have completely exhausted me.

C. Be thick-skinned when looking for OBs. I had always wanted to get OB
near my home. I did get one 2-wk OB near my home through internal connection.
Then I tried to find more OB here. After several receptionist/nurse/
physicians said no, I felt too embarrassed to call more people. Until this
January I called about 15 physicians using the contact phone numbers I found
on the insurance company\'s web site. I finally got the opportunity to
shadow with a physician full time for a whole month, both in the clinic and
on the floor. It was a wonderful learning experience. If I had got this OB
last year, I should have got a very strong LOR. Also, another tip is to get
OB from free clinic, which will be a little easier.

D. Always prepare a lot of questions to ask programs. There was one faculty
who talked with me for only 2 sentences and then asked me: do you have any
questions? So I had to fill the 20-30 minute interview with questions. I
feel it is an art to ask appropriate questions that can add credit.

I greatly appreciate this web site, Dr. He, my friends, and some alumni.
My whole family gave me a lot of support. My husband has been very
supportive during the whole process. He took care of our two little kids besides his
full time job when I went out interviewing. My mother-in-law and my mother
helped us a lot. When I felt frustrated, I hugged my kids and they are the
source of my endless courage.

It was a rocky road but I managed to walk through. I had mixed feeling when
I got the pre-match. Finally, I will be able to return to my medical career,
after so many years!

Good luck everyone! Do not give up!!!

droplets:

unfortunately, EAD is not treated the same as GC. BUT, it is much better
than H1. I did get feedback from programs that they only accept GC holders
and that is why my application did not get a look. Even for the programs I
interviewed with, I was asked what EAD meant; if it is possible that I will
be denied of GC; why I still did not get GC (sigh, they may ask my company\'s
attorny for the long story behind it).

After sending out some applications, I realized the problems. Then I added a
short paragraph in my PS that EAD meant I do not need visa (The ERAs
document mentions that the applicants can add explanation of the visa status
in the PS). I did send out emails to programs to explain my visa but do not
feel it helped much. But it does not hurt either.

3/6/2009:

: Congratulations and thanks for telling us your touching story!
: Does EAD user was treated the same as a GC holder?
: Do they know what is \"EAD\", do you need to explain it to every program?
