the delay, I have been busy on my rotations.
Although my score is not that high, considering that I
only studied for 5 weeks, I think my study method is
pretty efficient. Hopefully, it will be helpful for those
who does not have much time to study.
The only study material I used were: First Aid(FA) 2014,
UWorld(UW), Pathomaand NBME forms. I am a 3rd year medical
student in Texas and I only had 5 weeks to study, so using
too many resources was not a good idea for me. I would
rather concentrate on a few High Yield resources, finish
them, insteadof losing focus on too many different resources.
Concept driven, question based, and group oriented
6/15/2014 Usmle step 1: 258
6/19/2014 Comlex level 1: 800
1. Concept driven
为考题都不会去考那些非常细的东西。Someone once told me that
USMLE is supposed to be a easy test, I did not believe
them, but now, I do. Because of the broad coverage of
material, the question has to be very simple and straight
forward, at least to the people who made those questions.
When you see a question, think about why the author made
this question, what important concept are they trying to
test. If you can figure that out, it becomes very easy.
他们并没有理解里面很多东西。That is the beauty of USMLE,
it is a test that not only test your knowledge but more
importantly, test your reasoning ability. Some of the
questions on the NBME are pure logic questions; you don’t
have to have any medical background to answer some of
2. Question Based
到了。Try not to remember the questions, but the concepts.
One thing that is very important, I learned from another
post, is to remember the pictures of NBME. They use the
same pictures a lot of times, just asking different
questions on it.
Here is my NBME score in Chronological orders:
nbme 12-- 620
nbme 13 -- 650
nbme 15 --610
nbme 16 --670
3. Group Oriented
Lastly, I would like to talk about my experience on the
actual date of exam.I basically eat some light breakfast
and got there early around 0730. The testing center people
prefer that I get there early, otherwise, they said it
’s going to be a long line.
I basically started the test early and took a 5 mins break
in between each block and a 30 mins break for lunch.
I feel the actual test is much harder than the NBME questions.
Every block Ihave at least 10-15 questions marked, not
sure what is going on. I feel for my test, I had a lot of
Step 2 like questions, meaning there are a lot of true
clinical questions, rather than a lot of basic science
questions for some reason. Actually for my test, FA was
not that helpful. I heard that the NBME was trying to
change the test because people have been doing better
and better at it.
I did not feel like question stems were that long, as
some of the people were talking about it on this website.
I think the length of the questions were reasonable and
manageable. However, I did have some time crunch. Every
block I only had around 5-10 mins left, and I could only
re-check the questions that I marked. The reason is because
the questions are harder, not because they are longer than
I heard that they have a lot of experimental questions
and the most important thing is not freak out. Take a
deep breath, keep calm and endure through it.
Good luck on all of ya’ll who are still studying hard!
You can do it!!!
