A lesson from my observership...Never assume that you are just doing the
watching part during the observership. On my first day, I was like a little
tail following the attending and walk into an examination room. He briefly
introduced me to the patient and then left me there with the patient alone.
At that moment my mind was totally blank. I didn't expect this happen. I
thought what I can do is just observe and no interactions with patients. I
tried to calm myself down and did the history taking from the patient who
has the "white coat syndrome". Unfortunately, this is not the worst part.
Later the attending asked me what I got from the patient. There was an
awkward silence lasting 5 seconds. "Mrs.*** has no complaints today." This
is the beginning and the end of my presentation. I really wanted to dig a
hole to hide there that day...Though it is not a successful experience, I
feel lucky becaues it spurred me to study harder. I am grateful to this
Forgot to mention...it is an outpatient clinic(internal medicine). Most
patients are follow ups.
If an attending asks you what you found from patient, how would you response
Any kind of help would be highly appreciated...Thanks.
