thanks very much for sharing.

I have a question that may be common to Chinese. You said you would pick
someone who is passionate, and humble. My personal feeling is that most
Chinese is already humble enough, if we go over the board, people may think
we are not confident.

Would you like to share some comments about how you think?

Humble does not mean not confident. It's hard to describe. You may get the
feeling when you interview people. I made the same mistake before but now I
know what is humble and meek, what is inconfident.
Actually most Indians are very good. They are delightful and humble.
American graduates are usually too confident. Chinese are too quiet. And
they have trouble finding topics to continue the talk.

The way you talk and how you answer the question, the tone, the posture, body
language will show people if you are humble or not.And you really need to
be humble inside.

For example, if you always say I....., I......., I......, I......, people
will think you are not humble, and too proud of yourself. Most people will
not like candidates who think they are important themselves.

For the achievement, you can start with: it is very fortunate to be able to
work on .... with Dr. abc. We found that... , and we published... and filed
a patent...... I learned a lot.

Carry a pleasant conversation is very important. Learn how to talk to people
. For people who have been studying crazy, not talking a lot, this can be
quite a challenge.

Clinical research or basic research. Some people had PhD degree or did
postdoc so they have tons of publications. Some people had a lot of clinical
case reports or retrospective studies, or reviews during residency. Some
people don't have a lot of papers, but somehow they showed their interest in
hem/onc.

: yf姐说的research是哪种research啊,是做residency期间做的clincial research么

1. Some people were screened out because of being quiet or being too
aggressive, I wonder why they were recruited as residents and finished 3
years of residency training? Does it mean residency screening have different
criteria?

Answer: I don't know. I am going to interview residency candidates next week
. i will see.

2. USMLE score is considered during fellowship screening, I wonder why low
score candidates still could be recruited during residency screening, and
looks like the tests and evaluations during residency don't count when you
apply for fellowship.

Answer: The ones who have low scores all have connections. Some did research
with our attendings, some have relatives who are directors or chairmans in
our institution. The tests during the residency don't count. The
recommendation letters count.

3.For research, during residency, residents can do some case report, I don't
think they can do complicated clinical trail research or basic research if
they are not in physician-scientist track.

Answer: I actually saw quite a lot of people did a bunch of retrospective
studies, or case reports, or some even wrote protocol and completed some
small studies such as outcome research and quality control studies. As I
said before, some candidates had done postdoc work and had PhD degree, so
they have a lot of basic research publications. Clinical trials are possible
too. People write papers when the trials are completed. They can be first
or second authors but the PI be the last author. Don't forget, not everybody
are fresh graduates. We have a few hospitalists, and a few assistant
professors who applied to fellowship programs. I don't understand why the
assistant professors are interested in doing fellowship. But they are really
good. They are mature, humble, extremely smart, very friendly.

Regarding the rank list, we did not put the best ones first because we know
that they will not rank us first. We put those who we like very much but may
or may not match somewhere-else on the top. We put those who we like but
are not so excellent yet they have strong reasons to come to our program at
the lower part of top 10 to make us safe. The last 5 who we did not rank, we
think we would rather end up unmatched than having them as fellows. Those
people are very uncomfortable to work with.

The power of match is in the hands of candidates. So rank the program you
like best first.
