North Shore university hospital and Long Island Jewish Hospital used
to have
two separate programs but now they are merging. In the year of 2011,
the
two programs will be totally merged. There will be total of 5
positions.
The interview started at 9:00am with an introduction from PD of
NorthShore
program, Dr. Bradley, who will become the PD of the combined program
in the
future. He is a very nice person with a sense of humor. It would be
fun to
work with him.
Fellows will be rotating in two hospitals. But because of some
uncertainty
of future strucuter, the detailed rotation schedule is not available.
But
anyway the first year will be busy, fellow mainly work on floors and
take
consults, and go to clinics. Third year don't take weekend calls. So
all
weekend calls are split among first year and second year fellows.
Fellows in
LIJ see pt with attendings in the clinics, fellows in North shore have
a
lot of autonomy, they usually take care of pts as if they are theirs.
Again,
because of the merging of the two programs, it's not sure how much
autonomy
will the fellows have in the future. The North Shore hospital has a
special
leukemia program which is unique. There are big name CLL doctors in
the
program(Dr. Rai, who invented Rai staging system for CLL).
There were 7 interviewees on that day. Each of us was interviewed by 3
or 4
faculties. Two of them were Dr. Bradley and Dr. Patel(PD of LIJ). They
are
two decision makers. They are all very nice. The interivewers told me
the
program is a clinical oriented program, if I want to be a lab person,
this
is not a good place for me. Research wise, there is not much basic
research.
All research are retrospective or chart review or case report kind of
things. $1500/yr for each one to go to conferences. Fellows are very
happy,
they are not very interested in research, but they are well trained
clinically. And if they really want to do some translational research,
they
can do.
Long Island is the surburd of NYC, very nice neighbourhood, very good
school
district. 10 minutes train to Flushing main street, 30 minutes' train
to
Penstation in Manhatten. Very convenient. Only thing is that the
housing is
very expensive. 2 bedroom rent is $2400-2600 if it's near hospital. A
lot of
people live in Queens or even in Staten Island.
