The sale: Over 500 vendors selling handmade arts and crafts without
the cost of a middleman.
Expect to spend: Something. You can't walk away from this fair empty-handed.
Low-price lowdown: This fair is touted as the largest street fair in
Washington so you'll have a huge selection of goodies to choose from. Some
of the most inexpensive items are
fragrant handmade soaps. Or look for the big slabs of soap that look like
molded Jell-O with canned fruit thrown in—just ask the vendor to slice
off a hunk. Jewelry is a fair favorite (since prices are typically less
than in stores) and there's tons of it, from silver and precious gem
earrings to handcrafted beaded necklaces. If you're shopping for your home,
there's an abundance of pottery and glassware, candles, prints, and metal
sculpture for your garden. Leather goods—including handbags, clothes, and
accessories—are good buys, too. And tie -dye is a Fair staple, showing up
in the form of T-shirts, dresses and even baby clothes. Some classics never
go out of style.
Buyer alert: Early is best, and try the north end of the fair around 50th
for a shot at nearby street parking.
