As many of you already know about the accident happened to li yu.
so I think it is not improperate to uncover the situation here on bbs
and hope we can get more help from friends around US.

---------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

Please see the forwarded e-mail from Karen Saiff, WakeMed, on the
urgent needs for Li Yu who was injured in a car accident.  Li Yu still
needs 24 hour care and liquid feeding.  But because the only income to
support him, his mother and father is from his girl friend Ding
Weiling's TA of $1000/month at NCSU, they cannot afford to feed him
liquid food as required by WakeMed.  As a result, his situation is
getting worse. WakeMed has used several funds to assist him for
several months, but they need our help to continue the liquid
feeding.  Please help one of our country man who is in an unfortunate
situation.  He needs
donation to continue liquid feeding. Again, we are very grateful for
him to have such a loving and dedicated girlfriend.  But they need
more help and urgent help for his current situation (see enclosed
email).

Please let's continue our local Chinese Community's tradition on
helping each other. If you would like to make donation, please write
your check to CAFA with a notation of "Student Accident" and send the
check to

Dear Mr. Bailian Li,

I received an email from Bei Ye informing me that you and the Chinese
american Friendship Association may be able to assist a client I am
working with, Li Yu.  Any assistance you can provide Li Yu and his
family would be appreciated by all.  Let me update you on his
situation.

Li Yu is a 24-year-old Chinese man who began N.C. State graduate
school this past fall.  He has lived in the USA since 8/99.  He was
involved in a motor vehicle accident in 11/99.  He sustained a closed
head injury with a hemorrhagic component.  At this time he is
attending Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies at WakeMed Day
Treatment Program in Raleigh, NC.  He requires 24-hour care and
supervision secondary to his cognitive and physical limitations.  His
parents spent their life savings to come to the United States from
China to provide the required 24-hour care and supervision for LI Yu.
He has no other support systems in the United States except for his
girlfriend, Ding Weiling.  She is also a graduate student and works as
a Teacher's Assistant.  She is trying to financially support herself,
Li Yu and his parents on the little bit of money she gets a month. She
is paying the Cobra payments for Li Yu's health insurance. They have
many other expenses such as, rent, electricity, phone, food and
medications for Li Yu.  The Jevity, which is used for his tube
feedings, is about $500.00 a month.  Li Yu's mother Wang Zhihui has
already lost her job as a Professor of Archeology in China due to her
being in the United States for so long. Li Yu's father, Li Gui Lian,
will need to return to China soon or he too will lose his job.  He is
a Professor of Law at Beijing University School of Law.  Due to Li
Yu's residency status he is not eligible for many of the services in
the Untied States.  We have been able to find donations for food,
Jevity, equipment and medications since 3/28/00 but are running out of
resources.  At this point his insurance is covering his therapies.
We are doing a swallowing test next week to see if Li Yu can begin
eating but even if he starts to eat he will need to receive Jevity
until the doctor assesses that he is eating enough to meet his
nutritional needs.  This could be for several months.  When working
with the human body and especially one that has suffered a brain
injury the healing time is variable.  Li Yu will continue to heal for
up to 2 years.  He will probably not be in therapy that long.  We have
set an estimated length of stay at this time because it is hard to
determine how long he will need to be with us.  I would estimate that
he may be in therapy for 5 more months and require tube feedings for
AT LEAST 5 more months, it could be more if his swallowing does not
improve.  Some people don't ever improve, but everybody is different.
I would also estimate that Li Yu and his families needs are $2000 a
month.  Once again the Jevity is $500 a month and his other
medications are about $200 a month.  His rent is $415 a month.  Cobra
is $100 a month.  Electricity/gas and phone are $150 or more a month.
And then there is food for his parents and girlfriend as well as the
miscellaneous items that come up every month, for example toiletries,
household supplies, clothes, transportation and school supplies for
Ding.

I know that this is a lot of money and we would be grateful for any
small part that you and CAFA can help with.  Since Ding makes some
money a month I would estimate their financial need at $1000 a month
more than what she brings home. I have been advising them to try and
save as much as they can to use for future medication and Jevity
purchases because I am running out of resources to help supply these
items.

Please feel free to call me anytime for further information or if I
can be of any assistance.  I appreciate all your time and
consideration for assisting Li YU and his family.

Sincerely,

Karen Saiff, LCSW, CCM
